About the Heavin School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education

The Heavin School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education provides an interdisciplinary approach to lifelong learning for adult learners interested in exploring values inherent in the liberal arts, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. The curriculum for liberal arts programs delves into a specialized depth of knowledge through areas of study, combined with the breadth of general education.

The School is named in honor of Gary Heavin '02 and his wife, Diane, whose generous support of the University has played a key role in the creation of new academic programs and provided the Thomas Edison State University Foundation with a significant addition to its endowment.

Mission and Purpose

The Heavin School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education is dedicated to the intellectual and professional development of its students. The Heavin School offers rigorous degree programs that provide students with significant depth and breadth of knowledge. Arts and sciences degree programs feature an interdisciplinary approach to lifelong learning that is particularly important to those seeking management career paths in both government and private sector organizations. The liberal studies curriculum is designed to support management skills such as communications, writing, critical thinking and decision making.

The Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree programs in liberal studies can be individually designed for learners who have interests in multiple areas of study. The Master of Arts degree in educational leadership prepares students to become effective school leaders in addition to preparing students interested in New Jersey Supervisor and Principal certifications. The Master of Science degree in data science and analytics program provides students with graduate-level theoretical knowledge and applied skills, and the ability to derive value from data in real world decision making. All of the Heavin School’s degree programs provide students with flexible, high-quality learning experiences.

The Heavin School also offers a unique opportunity for those who wish to pursue a master's degree at Thomas Edison State University. Students who have earned at least 60 credits toward their baccalaureate degree may apply for conditional admission to a Thomas Edison State University graduate degree. Students can earn up to 12 credits that will concurrently satisfy both the undergraduate and graduate degree requirements.
