Independent Learning Courses for New Jersey National Guard

At Thomas Edison State University, our Independent Learning (IL) courses are one of many ways to earn credit and use approaches designed specifically with deployed service members in mind.

These courses can only be completed using the NJNG Tuition waiver. They are not approved for Veterans Benefits or Financial Aid.

How Independent Learning Courses Work

Independent Learning (IL) courses are offline, distance-learning courses designed to allow students to continue their education while deployed and without reliable, consistent Internet access. Students complete their assignments independently using texts, study guides, other materials. There is no mentor interaction for Independent Learning courses.

To get started:

It is critical that the package be submitted as early as possible, as successful registration is contingent on securing additional information, such as proctor approval, prior to deployment. Once all necessary information has been confirmed and approved, a registration will be processed, enabling the download of course content from a Moodle course page, accessible through the myEdison student portal. Given the course content is designed to be completed without Internet, course items must be downloaded prior to deployment/Internet non-connectivity.

Course results are different for all courses, but can be based on assignments, projects, proctored midterm and final exams, all taken completed by the end of the semester and submitted to the university via the approved proctor.

*The proctor must be a neutral third party with no on-going relationship to the student. This individual must also hold a position of responsibility and have no conflict of interest with either student or TESU. Acceptable as Proctors: Commissioned officers (senior to the student in rank) with no direct supervisory relationship to the student. Additional options: Test Control Officers (TCO), Education Services Officers (ESO), Career Counselors, Base Librarians, Chaplains.
