Sigma Theta Tau

The Upsilon Rho Chapter of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, was chartered in 2008.

Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) in 1922. Its vision is to create a global community of nurses who lead in using scholarship, knowledge, service and learning to improve the health of the world’s people. The purpose of the society is to recognize superior academic achievement and the development of leadership qualities; to foster high professional standards; to encourage creative work; and to strengthen commitment to the ideals and purposes of the nursing profession.

Nurse Leader Option
The W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing and Health Professions Upsilon Rho Chapter of Sigma (the International Honor Society of Nursing) celebrated its 15th anniversary on April 16, 2023. Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing was founded in 1922. The founders chose the name from the Greek words storgé, thárros and timé, meaning love, courage and honor. Excellence in nursing is recognized by membership as Sigma is an international community of nurses, dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, teaching, learning and service through the cultivation of communities of practice, education and research.

Student candidates shall have demonstrated superior academic achievement, academic integrity and professional leadership potential.

Criteria for membership in the Upsilon Rho Chapter for undergraduate RN-BSN students are as follows:

  • the student must have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale
  • the student must be ranked in the top 35% of the graduating class
  • the student must have been certified to graduate during the year (March, June, September or December)

Eligible undergraduate students who have been certified to graduate during the year (March, June, September and December) will receive an invitation via email in August. There is no application process.

Criteria for membership in the Upsilon Rho Chapter for Accelerated BSN Program students are as follows:

  • the student must have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale
  • the student must be ranked in the top 35% of the graduating Accelerated BSN Program class
  • the student must have completed at least half of the required nursing curriculum

Eligible Accelerated BSN Program students will receive an invitation via email during their last term of coursework. There is no application process.

Criteria for membership in the Upsilon Rho Chapter for graduate students are as follows:

  • the student must have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • the student must have been certified to graduate during the year (March, June, September or December)

Graduate student candidates may apply for membership by submitting the Graduate Student Application to the chapter by the deadline indicated on the application. Applications are emailed to all eligible graduate students in July. Eligible graduate students who apply and are accepted for membership will receive an invitation via email.

Nurse Leader Option


For students interested in joining STTI but do not meet the criteria outlined above, please visit www.sigmanursing.org to consider joining as a nurse leader.

Criteria for membership in the Upsilon Rho Chapter as a nurse leader are as follows:

  • candidates must be registered nurses, legally recognized to practice in their country
  • candidates must have earned a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in any field and have demonstrated outstanding achievement in nursing

Eligible nurse leader candidates who apply and are accepted for membership will receive an invitation to join via email.
